iModules Software Inc. in 2006 had been operating for four years, amassing a respectable core of moderate-sized colleges and private high schools for its online alumni services business, when it took a shot at the big time.

CEO Thomas DeBacco remembers heading into the Overland Park office on the day after Thanksgiving to make his team’s final presentation to officials from the University of Toronto. The Canadian leviathan — three campuses containing 30 academic divisions and an alumni database of around 450,000 names — represented iModules’ entrance to the top tier of North American universities.
