The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art is a privately funded college located in New York City. Founded in 1859 by Peter Cooper, it was his believe that the highest quality of education should be available for free to all who qualify. For more than 150 years, Cooper Union has admitted students on merit alone and provided each with a full-tuition scholarship and is one of a very few American institutions to practice this. The school offers programs for its nearly 1,000 students in architecture, fine arts, and engineering. With its programs ranking in the highest in the United States, Cooper Union is one of the most selective schools.
