news: Online giving strategies
17-Dec, Eight ways to give donations a boost
Staying on the Cutting Edge of Online Fundraising
Eight ways you can give donations a boost
Increased donations and participation, decreased mailing costs, and a more environmentally-friendly office are just a few of the changes that can be achieved by focusing your efforts towards collecting donations online rather than through traditional methods. To maximize the potential of your online fundraising strategies, check out these helpful tips:
1. Embrace transparency and accountability
Donors want to know where their money is going and how efficiently your organization is operating before they make a gift. A 2009 Mintel report on charitable giving found that those who donate to nonprofits place a significantly higher importance on honesty and transparency than those who do not—so be candid. Put your financial data out there for donors to see. If you file a Form 990 or have an annual audited financial statement, considering making it available by link or PDF on your Web site.
2. Show real donors and real recipients
Photos, testimonials, and stories are great ways to connect your donors to each other and to those they are helping. Provide space on your Web site to spotlight donors, display photos of students or departments who have received help from your organization, and tell success stories about recent campaigns. Be liberal with these kinds of features. Donors love to be able to put faces on the gifts they are contributing.
3. Segment and target your online audience
Working online makes segmenting and targeting easier than ever. With good record keeping, you can segment based on age, gender, income, interests, previous giving history, geography, role (such as donor, volunteer, alumni, or parent), and more. Once you develop different versions of your e-mail campaign for each target group, test them! Track your results and you can quickly and easily get a feel for what kinds of appeals work for whom.
4. Create a memorable URL
Is your URL easy to remember? Is it straightforward? If you want alumni, family, and friends to easily find and regularly return to your Web site, give it an address that is not only memorable, but also telling of your organization’s name. If your organization has a long and bulky name, then create a unique Web address, as the Arthritis Research Institute of America did with its Web site, www. preventarthritis.org.
5. Let them “Donate Now” from every page
Many organizations make the mistake of only having one clear, easy-to-see “Donate Now” button on the homepage. Keep in mind that many visitors will find your Web site through a search, meaning they could land on any page of your site. If you want to make sure these visitors are pointed in the right direction, include a “Donate Now” button or link on every page of your Web site, not just your homepage.
6. Make your site interactive
The beauty of the Internet is that it’s interactive. Web surfers expect to be able to do something when they visit a site, and yours is no exception. Keep donors engaged on your site with surveys, polls, quizzes, and refer-a-friend buttons. The longer a visitor is on your Web site, the more likely they are to learn about your organization and eventually click that donate button.
7. Explore all of your online options
Online fundraising is no longer limited to your Web site and e-mail marketing strategies. Expand your thinking to include social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and YouTube. Reach out to your donors in their social spaces. Get the word out about your campaign, provide links to your donation forms, and show videos about your organization. Remember, these sites are no longer just for Generation Y. The fastest growing demographic on social media sites is 55 and older.
8. Provide lots of ways to donate—not just online
Unfortunately, just because donors find you online doesn’t mean they want to give online. Even though you try to encourage it, some donors just aren’t ready or willing to donate over the Web. However, the ultimate goal of your organization is to raise funds, and you need to accommodate that however and wherever possible. Make sure your Web site has the information donors need to give by mail, phone, or other methods.
As online fundraising continues to grow in popularity among nonprofits, your Web page for donations needs to stand out in both design and functionality. Taking just a few simple steps to ensure your organization is on top of the online fundraising game can make a tremendous difference in the overall success of your donation campaigns. Click here to learn how Encompass can help you implement a strong online fundraising strategy.
